How to reduce your household energy consumption during hot seasons.

Summer seasons in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are characterized by very high temperatures. It starts in April and will reach its peak around August. The weather will be very hot and have high humidity which makes being outdoors unbearable. UAE’s residents will be spending their entire day indoors, where air conditioning helps create a comfortable environment. During this period, energy consumption increases substantially, which leads to the soaring of the DEWA bill. In this blog post, we shall discuss some basic tips that can help you reduce energy consumption during the hot months.

Air conditioning during the hot season consumes a large amount of energy. It is advisable to set the thermostat at 24°C or above and on automatic mode so that it shuts and restarts at intervals. This can help you save up to 9 percent on cooling costs. It is important to note that every time you decrease the temperature by one-degree celcius, you are increasing your AC consumption by five percent. Also, make sure all your household windows and doors are properly shut when air conditioning is on. This will make the air conditioners more energy efficient.

Lights

Turn off lights in rooms that are not being used. Make use of natural light during the daytime. Install efficient LED lights. LEDs lights consume at least 50 percent less energy than fluorescent, halogen, and incandescent lights. Their lifetime is more than 5 times longer than other lights.

Unplug electronic devices and chargers when they are not in use. Be aware that most electronic devices use electricity even when switched off. When you are defrosting, consider using your microwave oven instead of your main oven whenever possible. This saves so much more energy and reduces your bill.

Switch off the water heater for this can save you up to 50 percent on your water heating energy consumption. If you need hot water to bath, switch it on for 20 minutes before you shower. Do not keep it on all day.

Around 90 percent of a washing machine’s energy is used to heat the water. Wash your clothes at 30-40 degrees Celsius and help keep your electricity bill in check.  Try and operate the washing machine only when you are doing full loads.
